5. The Large Hadron Collider (a scientific instrument) was now functional and providing useful technology for the Europeans. Its spinoffs will invigorate European careers and labs, not American. Recently, the $8-billion collider which isn't at full power yet, successfully accelerated the machine's twin beams of protons to 1.18 trillion electron volts. That surpasses the previous collider record of 0.98 trillion electron volts, set in 2001 by America's Tevatron collider.
